New Student Approach

By Cindy Rose Diabordo

Many fresh faces have enrolled in LLCI this year. Of course, talented, intelligent and confident students are added in our population. Speaking of talented students, LLCI welcomes David Hertz Sanchez, a freshmen student. He spent his elementary days in Merida Central School. He lived in Merida, Leyte. He was born on February 12, 1993.

He was known by everybody as Hertz. Everyone may have noticed this small, cute freshman dancing in the dance floor with much grace and confidence. Aside from being a good dancer, his classmates were impressed with him because he is vocal in class and at the same time good in Mathematics. They also said that he is the kind of person who knows how to deal with different kinds of people and situations. He is much impressed with the teachers, students and staff of LLCI. “I like LLCI because the teachers are good and disciplinarian whom students really need to become a better and successful one. The students are also fun-to-be-with, friendly and approachable so I don’t have that difficulty to adjust.”

As Hertz continue his journey in this institution, let’s try to witness the rise of his talents and abilities as he succeeds in his plans. He may be one of the good examples in us all as he makes a difference. As James Baldwin said, “The greatest significance of the present student generation is that it is through them that the point of view of the subjugated is finally and inexorably being

Teachers' Day 2006

By: Len Amelia Cainghug

Lideans paid tribute to their mentors during the celebration of Teachers Day, which was held on Jan. 19, 2006 in Building B from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) President, Mr. Sherlock Codilla delivered the welcome address. He revealed the hardships that teachers undergo that being a teacher is a real job. “They even often get in trouble with parents regarding the children’s grades,” he said.

The Supreme Student Government (SSG) selected high school students to have their own definition of “TEACHERS”. Elementary students also showcased their dancing prowess.

The highlight of the program was the “Battle of the Brains”, which was participated by teachers of various subjects. The teachers were divided into eight groups. The second group which was consisted of Mr. Michael Pacayra, Mrs. Vengie Solis, and Ms. Ivy Nillas, emerged victorious.

PTA President, Mr. Sherlock Codilla spearheaded the giving of tokens. Students also handed personal tokens of gratitude to their teachers, while selected high school students rendered songs for the pedagogues like “Thanks To You”, “Because of You”, and “Bayani”.

“The teachers should be given the respect that they deserved for they are our second parents,” he stated.
LLCI Sophie Kicks High in SEA Games Try-out

By: Chynna Victoria Labastilla

With her high kicks, Samantha Alexa Lagcao showed off her Kata, danced in the Kumite, and bagged the bronze during the try-out for the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games held in Mandaue Sports Complex last September 24-25 2005. Mayor Thadeo Z. Oano of Mandaue City organized the try-out.

Lagcao,a sophomore of LLCI, and a member of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) Karatedo Team, fought with the black and brown belters superbly in front of the judges who were Karatedo instructors and the members of the RP team. She had her first bout for the eliminations with a score of 7-5, proceeded to the quarters with the score 8-2.

During the Kumite semi-finals, Lagcao delivered a punishing kick to the opponent’s body garnering two points, and two quick punches on the opponent’s front body garnering two points for a total of four points. The opponent, Riza Torres of the Association for the Advancement of Karatedo (AAK), was first able to break in a knocking kick on Lagcao’s body, when she earned two points easily. At the last minute of the decisive play, Lagcao and Torres simultaneously kicked at each other’s head. Torres won three points and she sped up to the finals.

15 Karatekas composed the PAF while 27 Karatekas made up the AAK. As expected, it was the AAK who held the spotlight longest because the team brings the name of the country in International Tournaments- of course, they are taught with the best techniques by the World Karatedo Federation (WFK) and they’re responsible for sharing the knowledge learned.

Lagcao said, "There was no clear chance for us (PAF team) to win and we're unprepared. We did not come to win but to expose ourselves and know our weaknesses." She added, "Win or lose, smile pa rin. I'm still young and there are still many chances to come."

So Who's The Best?

So Who's The Best?
Classico Contra Moderno
by: Rachele Danica Colon

Music of Old and New

Who does not know Hale, Cueshe, South Border, U-Turn, M.Y.M.P. and a whole lot more of Filipino bands? Eh bien, they are famous these days, and people go 'loko' with their concerts. And I must admit I love these bands. But talking about the sense of their songs, well that's a question.

Return to the times of Beegees, The Beatles, Carpenters, David Pomeranz and a bunch of singers contemporary to them. Aren't their songs the one's considered classics? The songs whose elegance and magnificence remains eternal? Who didn't appreciate the romantic sensation brought to us by Especially for You, Ocean Deep and Love Moves in Mysterious ways; which is gung by M.Y.M.P? Aren't these songs revivals and are originally sung by those singers in the late 70's (In other words, the Classical Age of Music)? We can't deny the fact that classical songs are far better than today. I'm not saying that the kind of music we have today is that of very low standard, well, for some maybe. But aren't we suppose to be improving the quality of our music instead of degrading it?

The Movies of Past and Present

Who haven't heard of the movie Sound of Music? or Mary Poppins? (Well, if you don't, you better start studying general knowledge). But to those who had watched these films or heard feedbacks, aren't they all compliments? Aren't these fabulous, enchanting and fun? These are but two of those millions of movies which we consider timeless. And take note, they are all classical.

While modern movies are, should we say sometimes a little bit humiliating. The scandalous and obscene scenes which are always the cause of the increase in crime rate (Hey, they trigger or should we say, arouse the erotic imaginations of men in general. Admit it!) Although there are movies which are rated B or A by the MTRCB, but aren't they few compared to the K,M,N...rating of movies?

Aren't you aware that the standard of our movies are now slowly but surely degrading? (And another score for the classics).

*************

When we talk of technology, what can you say of the modern age? (Eh bien, no doubt, modern age rules!) Technology of today are fastly improving. It's just like imagining that some time in the future (maybe in 10 years), we'll be seeing flying saucers, I mean cars. And with these inventions, Science and Mathematics are also improving. We had now discovered new results that contradicts the beliefs or some established theories of the past. It's beyond compare to those of classicals.

But what about the values? Hey, there's no denying the fact that along with the improvement of science is the demerit of our values. What can you say of the youth today? Like, just take a look at the way they dress. It seems that they lack fabrics, duh, with the improvement of technology. Why? In the classical period, you can see women weaving long and bulky gowns and to consider the kind of fabric factories they had during their times.
I'm not saying that technology is wicked. It's certainly depends on the way people use it. Technology is made for the people and for the improvement of life, not for it's destruction and nature's!Aren't you even aware of the effects of the misuse of technology will aslo affect Mother Earth? The misuse of air, land and water, aren't these the ones we call pollution? Aren't you also aware of the effects of pollution to us? Take a note of the ability or capacity of students to learn, didn't you notice that most of us slow-learners compared to the people in the past?

Music, movies and even in values, we can clearly see the contrasts of the classical and modern age. Let's just admit it that the modern age is at lost. When we should have been better, we only show that we are far worst than those of the past. Yet, there's hope. But then, it all goes back to the kind of citizens living in this world.
Now the question still remains...who's the best?

LIDEANS Speak

Compiled by: Christian Colibao, Jayril Dumagsa, and Mary Grace Nepomuceno

With the different problems that beset our country and our community, students have taken part in sharing thier own sentiments and concern about the issues that affect them. The LIDEANS selected three issues and interviewed the students for thier opinion.

1. Separation of elementary and high school department in school-wide activities.

Comments:

"No, because some high school activities are interesting to the
elementary department and we will not be able to participate if that
happens."

-Dhn Gry Fatima Leopoldo - Gr6 Maalalahanin

" I agree. The high school students have different capabilities and standards compared to the grade school pupils. The programs become too long just to accomodate the presentations from preschool to fourth year"

-Chynna Victoria Labastilla - 4th year Mapagkumbaba

"I agree so we could really test the students' leadership capabilities and the SSG officers will be more usefull in that time. But somehow, it depends on the kind of activities being conducted."

-Manilyn Sapilan, 1st year Mapaglingkod

Question: What do you think is the reason why students do not accept responsibilities nowadays?

“Because there is the presence of fear of responsibilities and also some students are afraid of failures.”

Kristy Cotiangco, 1-Mapaglingkod

“Due to lack of confidence. Also they are just thinking that it is such a tiring job or shall I say, “lazy”.

Sheila Fe Casera, 3-Mapagkawanggawa
