With her high kicks, Samantha Alexa Lagcao showed off her Kata, danced in the Kumite, and bagged the bronze during the try-out for the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games held in Mandaue Sports Complex last September 24-25 2005. Mayor Thadeo Z. Oano of Mandaue City organized the try-out.
Lagcao,a sophomore of LLCI, and a member of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) Karatedo Team, fought with the black and brown belters superbly in front of the judges who were Karatedo instructors and the members of the RP team. She had her first bout for the eliminations with a score of 7-5, proceeded to the quarters with the score 8-2.
During the Kumite semi-finals, Lagcao delivered a punishing kick to the opponent’s body garnering two points, and two quick punches on the opponent’s front body garnering two points for a total of four points. The opponent, Riza Torres of the Association for the Advancement of Karatedo (AAK), was first able to break in a knocking kick on Lagcao’s body, when she earned two points easily. At the last minute of the decisive play, Lagcao and Torres simultaneously kicked at each other’s head. Torres won three points and she sped up to the finals.
15 Karatekas composed the PAF while 27 Karatekas made up the AAK. As expected, it was the AAK who held the spotlight longest because the team brings the name of the country in International Tournaments- of course, they are taught with the best techniques by the World Karatedo Federation (WFK) and they’re responsible for sharing the knowledge learned.
Lagcao said, "There was no clear chance for us (PAF team) to win and we're unprepared. We did not come to win but to expose ourselves and know our weaknesses." She added, "Win or lose, smile pa rin. I'm still young and there are still many chances to come."
